If you do send emails please try and make them succinct and to the point and gather questions into single emails rather than bombarding her with multiple individual questions.

Week Seven

Thanks for all your work this week, all the projects are looking very clear and convincing in terms of narrative messaging, and the structures to deliver them are developing well.
No notes or presentation from this week but we did mention a few things that you might like to follow up:

For next week can we please have clearly drawn plans of your proposed experiences.

Week Six Brief

Here is the Narrative Brief.

Please get your stories figured out and selected for next week's lesson.

They don't need to be over complex and don't need to be overly detailed, the clarity of the relationship between your narrative threads is the important thing.

We mentioned the Wellcome Collection, go and visit.

I believe I also mentioned Philip Hughes' - Exhibition Design. It's a good how-to guide for creating exhibitions.

Layouts

As discussed during Monday the 14th's class, the diagrams to the left are commonly used narrative lead layouts. They are found in exhibition and retail environments, both temporary and permanent.

Over the weekend please photograph examples of these layouts being used, and come on Monday 21st prepared to describe them in terms of the stories they are structuring.

Week Five Presentation

Structuring narratives in spaces

This doesn't add anything to the notes but there are some nice examples of spaces structured according to narratives towards the end.

Narrative Presentation

The Monomyth

For those particularly interested in narrative there is a theory proposed by Joseph Campbell which suggests that all stories follow essentially the same structure.
This further suggests that there is one single structure that we understand and recognize - making us very adept at filling it the gaps if a narrative is presented incomplete.
The diagram to the left spells out the stages that make up this narrative form, and should - confusingly - be read anticlockwise.
Try applying it to whatever TV drama or film you happen to be watching.

A simple summary is here: Monomyth Simple Summary

and a detailed one is here: Monomyth Extended Summary

Welcome to Experience Design 2011

In a media-saturated world it is getting harder and harder for messages to be heard. Increasingly all sectors (commercial and cultural) are looking beyond the printed page and recorded communication to reach their audience. Industry now demands a new type of practitioner who can communicate in a way that engages all the senses of the audience - people who can integrate objects, text, sound, images and film creating experiences that deliver meaning and messages in the environment. Practitioners who are able to work within interdisciplinary teams lead this emerging field.

This course looks at the theory behind this type of design and explores its practical application through a range of projects tailored to the particular ambitions of the group.

We explore Narrative as a design tool and interaction as a method of engagement. You will be introduced to research techniques and ways to interpret and incorporate this research into coherent projects. To realise your projects you will be working collaboratively, enabling outcomes that could never be achieved by an individual. You will leave the course with concrete strategies for getting the most out of this challenging, rewarding and essential approach to creativity.
